T is for traveling with a toddler

Long long time ago, there was a blog called wandering feet. An enthu nut thought she could manage another blog on travel –

There was one blog post. Over the 4 years of existing – this post had 2 views

And so here goes this post when we travelled to Australia with our 19 month old .

Flying with a toddler

You must be crazy or very very brave!

That’s what we heard every time we told people, we were planning to holiday in Australia and taking our 19 month old toddler with us.

For us the decision to travel to Australia was easy. Since the Elf got to travel free until he was 2 – we decided the place to holiday was the one with the most expensive air ticket. And Hence Australia won!

On October 1st, like all good travellers we informed everyone on Facebook that we were off to Australia. The Elf was taught to say “YAY” every time he heard the word Australia and video of the same was promptly uploaded by his besotted cool mother.

And so it came that one clueless toddler and two ‘slightly’ nervous adults got into a flight.

Did i say a flight – sorry i lie.

We took the Air India dreamliner to Australia – A Mumbai – Delhi – Sydney – Melbourne flight – yup you got it – 2 stop overs before our final destination because we are THAT brave or just THAT dumb!

Air India seems to be have conspired with the toddler and attempted the “Divide and Rule” policy. They overbooked our existing seats and attempted to give us seats that were not together on the longest leg between Delhi and Sydney. But Ha! we caught onto the conspiracy and promptly put on our saddest faces while asking fellow passengers to have pity on us and let us sit together.

And of coursing adding to the excitement was the delayed landing on the Mumbai – Delhi Flight resulting in a marathon run from the domestic terminal to the international terminal with the 10.5 kilos of wriggling mass.

So the Elf was fine on the flight, and was very excited about us being in the sky. Everyone of the flight was duly informed that “Plane is in sky” over and over again because everyone knows that everything should be repeated a billion times in toddler land.

The Husband and I on the other hand – had our limbs just a tad bit full with a wriggling active child who thought bouncing around the flight was extremely amusing. And what’s funnier than knocking over dinner and watching mama clean dal and rice from the Carpet.

The elf then stretched out across the mother and father and slept – we sat still out of fear of waking him up. . And of course we slept, just to be woken up in fifteen mins to be served dinner!

So since i am the crazy brave mother who flew with her toddler to the another hemisphere, here are my tips for surviving a flight with a toddler

-> First off and the most critical – Praise God that a certain Mr Jobs existed. Of course the ipad. While we would like to believe that we are those parents that limit screen time, Lords Knows we prayed that BAA BAA BLACK Sheep would never run out of his wool.

-> On the flight, carry like a million pairs of clothes because your kid will try to outwit you and require just one more than what you have carried. And the really smart would carry a change of clothes for themselves.

-> Carry food for your kid – lots of snacks, milk, food- Air India at least doesn’t cater for the food requirements for non seat occupying babies and will give you a meal “only if there is any left over”. And no the food is not baby friendly. Thank God, i was struck by some form of wisdom and had plenty of food

-> Do take a bassinet seat – your limbs will thank you. While we didnt have one while going to Australia, coming back we got our bassinet seat and it was the best thing ever. The todd was slept in the bassinet with his feet sticking out while the parents fervently watched movies – only another parent would understand why i use the word fervently.

-> And Relax – i truely believe babies & kids feed off your energy!

->And the most important rule of them all – You will never see the people on the flight again

H is for holidays

So on 28th of March my house was stuck by an earthquake and on 29th by a tornado and the subsequent jolts, quivers and speedy breezes have continued since. I am surprised that the walls in my house are brave enough to stand.

The floor has given up and understands that its existence is going to be dotted by 32 small hot wheels cars and innumerable others cars and vehicles of different shapes and sizes.

My feet understand that until June every time it takes a step, a Lego will attempt to pierce right through my foot.

My sofas have put on a brave face and steadied their springs to the incessant jumping!

The artifacts around the house quiver when ‘
the whoosh of a ball passes them.

My fridge groans in despair after it has been opened for the 10563th time in the day.

My lap and nose and various body parts wonder in silence where they will live to see my 35th year of existence

As I walk around my house, I feel their accusingly looks and if they could talk they would say

Why nuttie why?!!

Sure every school has holidays but haven’t you heard of summer camps. Every Meena, Teena and Ameena is sending their kids to advance the kids skills while the mothers maintain their sanity. What bravery medal were you aspiring for when you decide your kid should be free during summer holidays. You wanted him to be able to do as he pleases during his holidays just like you did as a kid. Unstructured play it seems. Pfft…imagination some more pfft,

I take a deep breath and tell them only 7 weeks more.

I hear the low hum of chanting/praying and beseeching to the Gods while I walk away!

this is part of the Atozchallenge – unofficially of course and this is my entry for h

The Nutty World

So what has been happening with me?

Well we are back from a 5 day trip to Langakwi and while i may not declare this to be among my best holidays – a holiday is a holiday is a holiday and i shall not complain…Other than the fact that i found Malaysian’s very unfriendly, quite unlike their Thai counterparts.

Anyway, that apart…let me think what have i been up to?

Well i have a million half written posts in my head -and none documented. I dont feel like writing, i feel like somethings are to mundane to say, i dont feel like having an opinion or being funny or even writing a book review

Speaking about books – have u read the secret of the Nagas – so recommended. I love Amish’s imagination. i know people who dont like the fact that mythology has been twisted so much but hey it’s his interpretation – take it for what it is.

In other news – i am still existing at work. I feel disconnected from facebook and other social media. I keep in touch with few people and i keep in touch with them a lot!

Ummm…on an irrelevant note, my house – ufff it’s a mess. i have decided i will do one task a day and put this home of ours into order.

I want my life to be a holiday. I want to win a million dollars and never have to work again. I want to find a “higher” meaning to my life. I want to look beautiful, i want to be efficient. I feel i am not living my life fully and just about existing.

OK all that said, do i promise to blog more? I don’t know.

It’s been so long since…

– I looked up at the sky and saw stars
– I heard only the sound of waves
– I saw snow
– I left office and saw some form of sunlight
– I felt full of energy
– I slept and woke up feeling fresh
I we felt rested
– I enjoyed work
– I enjoyed a workout
– I updated my CV
– I listened to good music while driving
– My laptop behaved like a 21st century processor
– I got a pedicure
– I got a mommy hug
– I heard the grannies snore
– I went home to Bangalore
– I had a crazy conversation with Cheeni
– I had a good girly chat on men, sex, relationships, women and life in general
– I went on a girls night out
– I enjoyed shopping
– I called friends over for a meal
– I felt like being “OCD”ish abt the house
– I received a compliment on how i look
– I called my MIL
– I kept in touch with some old friends
– We had a “restful” holiday
– You kissed me –

yes the last kiss was more than 12 hrs ago but yay your flight lands in like an hour or so. At least some things have a solution in the near future 🙂

I have literally made a To-do list haven’t I???

Wheels on my feet

If there is one thing i can claim to be totally passionate about – it is planning a holiday. My life is planned around holidays…so there are pre-baby holidays, pregnancy holidays, infant baby holidays, toddler baby holidays, Teenager not so baby holidays, old age holidays – all planned out in my head.

My babies are deferred coz of lots of pending pre-baby holidays. I have to admit the only one of the main reason i got married soon was to fit in all the “together together” holidays i had planned. I am sure i will manage to remain pregnant until i finish my pregnancy holidays.

There are weekend getaways, action packed holidays, resting holidays, “Me too” holidays all readily available in the encyclopedia of my head.

There are getaways for all budgets – when our Home loan makes us paupers, when our kids make us almost paupers (2 lakhs school fees!!! are u kidding me), when we get a lottery, when the husband becomes CEO, when the sultan of Brunei passes on his inheritance to me.

I am usually my only client but once in a while an unknown victim happens to ask me for advice and i pretty much dictate them into following my plan to a T plan their itinerary. The world doesn’t appreciate talent when they see it.

So should we be looking at 10 days, need to rest, budget (thanks to the huge Home Loans EMI’s), Passport Chaap required – the grid in my head dictates Sri Lanka.

So that’s where we are off to end Nov (Passport god’s willing – to be precise – passport renewal god’s willing) and i would love suggestions on places to stay, things to do or visit in Sri Lanka.

Hmmmmph – of course i have an itinerary in my head but then again…i am open to ideas unlike this one colleague couple who asked for my advice on their honeymoon and totally disregarded my opinion. I still nag them on this on

Where is the Nut? What’s on in her world?

The nut world

– Visits goa once again…tans once again…the only person in the history of the world to tan while it is raining…!!! Dont ask me how…but i look burnt! and yes i did use SPF 60

– She who associates goa with relaxation learnt otherwise. Cute baby R is now a nine month Hurricane baby R…oh yes he is still a coochie moochie soochie coo…but he kept us on our toes…considering he can’t walk yet, it’s amazing he can get u so tired…but then he holds out his hand to come to you and smiles with his six teeth and u can “kind of” understand why people do this baby business

but until we become part of this baby business…NO holidays with babies…they are tiring!!!

The good part is a non relaxing long weekend makes it easier to get back to the slave drivers aka money providers.

– Falls ill in goa…Sob Sob…comes to work ill…no sympathy shown by slave drivers…*must have baby and go on maternity leave just to serve them right*

– did i mention the slave drivers have been creating havoc in the Nut’s yoga world…it’s been ages since she was “allowed” to leave for the same…Hmmmmphhhhh…

– Reads an awesome book – museum of innocence- must remember to review it

– must must renew passport….why mention it here…my blog so why not

– falls more in love with The Tall one…

Panchgani, Parenting and Posing!

One of the things i love about Mumbai is the number of weekend getaways that are just a couple of hours away – while most of them don’t boast of too many things to do – it is always fun to get away from the mad mad city and chill out with good friends or maybe just your spouse.

So the last weekend – four of us couples decided to go to Panchgani. Our friends R & A are 5 months old parents with the most adorable baby – Baby R…and it was very interesting to watch them do this whole parenting thing. They are the first of our friends (who we generally hang out with) to do this baby business and it is funny to see the beer loving, fun-loving, and “us” kind of people do this whole responsibility thing. A who i knew as a lazy lump, who spoke eloquently and decisively on all financial matters coochie coo a little baby!!! R who was always ready to kick butt in Teen pati/Taboo – give up on a game to catch up on some much-needed sleep or be with baby R!!!!…umm funny

But i must say i am so proud of the way R is handling things. She has a maid who come along on the trip (another first for us!) and i am so proud of the fact that R is such a hands on mom. The maid is literally a carrier of baby bags, the person who holds the dhakkan of the bottle while the milk is prepared, the person who wants dal chawal while we eat strawberries and fantastic pizzas…and yes the person who was with the baby for the half hour R decided to play with us while the baby slept. I love the fact that she is not dependent on the maid and she is the baby’s mommy full-time. Of course things will change when she gets back to work but i am confident she will work it out.

However i see the stress in R – the generally calm R gets irritated fairly quickly and has been taking it out on A – A has received quite a few earfuls in public view (Shudder shudder wonder what happens behind closed doors?) and i am so proud of A for the fact that he never once reacted or said anything back. In fact he goes out of the way to be nice to R, help her, offer to buy her flowers to get back into good books. (p.s. big step for the kanjus boy). Love i tell u is not easy…

It is scary though coz i know i have the potential to react the way R does to situations (Maybe not in public view but react still). I dont want to be ‘tana maroing’ the Tall one and he being nice. I want us both to not feel the stress but enjoy the baby, enjoy parenthood…But then again i dont have one of those small things…so i guess idealism is easy!

Btw for the record i think R & A are doing a fab job and baby R is such a coochie moochie soochie coo that i might just eat him up before he gets more adorable. It is so touching the way a baby laughs when u just look at them or say anything from “coochie coo” to “Kya ho raha hai” to the baby – how can u ignore such a doll..we spent most of the trip talking nonsense to baby R just to see his toothless smile. And what a baby sirji! he cried for 5 mins in the 2 day trip, never does susu on u, happily comes to all (including me!!!), smells divine, and has toes that will comfortably fit into my mouth to be chewed off.

So other than judging parenting skills – we did the usual – boat ride at night, teen patti where yours truly well and truly lost, slept in, visited table top, saw the pandavas foot marks (For the record – they had really tiny feet), ate, drank, debated endless “plans for the day” which we never did anyway, went in search of the last strawberries of the season and took countless posing snaps! Oh yeah – we walked past Arbaaz Khan, some of us posed with Vinod Khanna and we made search parties who would spot Salman Khan. The tall one spotted his arm getting into the car and i saw his car drive off! Yes we shared our residence with the movie crew of Salman’s new movie with Shatrugan Sinha’s daughter. (p.s. no we aint rolling in money, salman had heard that i would be there and downgraded himself to stay near me)

All in all – a good relaxing fun trip!

btw a tip to all who visit Panchgani – Buy the strawberry jam from hotel ravine…it is divine with real strawberry pieces! and while u are at it get me one too. And do visit Panchgani soon coz My stock is depleting at a very fast rate
